VANCEBORO — Using an aggressive attack, the West Craven Eagles stormed past the Washington Pam Pack, 4-2, on a soggy pitch Thursday night.

Antonio Lewis scored twice — once with his foot and once with his head — to lead the Eagles (5-2-1, 2-2-0) to their second straight Coastal Conference win. It also kept Washington (0-6-1, 0-4-0) in search of its first win.

Senior Sue Rocham and freshman Christian Wethington also scored for the Eagles.

“I didn’t look at what (Washington coach) Jimmy (Kozuch’s) record was,” West Craven coach Aaron Steele said.

“This conference is an anybody-can-beat-anybody conference. It comes down to who shows up.”

Lewis, a senior, gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead with a blast from 12 yards out, angling his shot past Pam Pam keeper Seth Correl (five saves). It came about halfway through the first half.

Rocham pushed his shot past the keeper six minutes later for a 2-0 lead. Wethington netted the first goal of his high school career three minutes later. The freshman collected a rebound and popped it into the back of the net.

“He’s got the mechanics,” Steele said. “We’ve been getting on him about crashing the net.”

David Giordano’s goal pulled Washington within 3-1.

Lewis scored his second goal, a header off a Lamberto Gomez corner kick, midway through the second half for a 4-1 lead.

“He really has been trying to lead this team,” Steele said of Lewis. “When he has the opportunity, he has been capitalizing.”

Washington’s Christian Crompton closed out the scoring with a goal with three minutes remaining.

Jesus Munoz had six stops in goal for West Craven.

West Craven plays at White Oak on Tuesday.
