 Eagles get historic win

The West Craven Eagles earned a 4-1 win over South Central on Thursday, winning a school-record 12th match this season.

“It feels really good,” West Craven coach Aaron Steele said. “It was a great team effort.”

The Eagles (12-1-1, 4-1-2) had just two shots on goal in the first half against South Central in this Coastal Conference match, but erupted for 15 in the second half. West Craven played without the services of Jaime Cortes (red-card suspension) and Joe Valdez (injury).

“When you are without two of your superstars, you find out how deep your team is,” Steele said. “The boys really rose to the occasion.”

Lamberto Gomez scored twice for West Craven. One came off an assist from Sue Rocham and the other came on a through-ball by Antonio Lewis. Rocham beat three defenders to notch the third goal and Ngen Rahlan capped the scoring.

Sam Mitchell had two saves in goal.

West Craven plays at Washington at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, then returns home Tuesday to face Havelock.
